Is buying a cheap Windows or Office key legal?

The honest answer has three parts, and only one of them is comfortable for a shop like this one to write down.

Buying is not the risky end of this

Start with the part that is not in dispute: a consumer buying a licence is not committing an offence. Whatever argument exists here is between the publisher and the seller, about whether a particular licence was distributed within its terms. It is a contractual question, and you are not a party to that contract.

This is not legal advice, and nothing on a shop's own website should be taken as such. It is a description of where the disagreement actually sits.

What EU law settled, and what it did not

In 2012 the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled in UsedSoft v Oracle (C-128/11) that a software licence sold outright in the EU can be resold: the rightsholder's distribution right is exhausted by the first sale, even for a download rather than a disc. The seller must make their own copy unusable, and a single volume licence cannot be carved into pieces.

That ruling is why a market in second-hand licences exists in Europe at all. What it did not do is bless every key sold cheaply on the internet. A licence bought in a cheaper region and resold elsewhere, or a volume agreement split into individual seats, sits outside what the court permitted — and publishers do sometimes withdraw keys they decide were distributed outside their terms.

So what is the real risk to you?

Not prosecution. The realistic worst case is that a key stops activating — either immediately, or months later when a publisher audits a batch. It is uncommon, and any shop claiming it is impossible is either inexperienced or lying to you.

Which makes the only question that matters a simple one: what happens then? That is where shops differ, and the answer is worth more than the two dollars between one price and another.

What we do about it

If a publisher ever revokes a key bought here, we replace it or refund you in full, with no time limit. Not fourteen days, not ninety — none. Send the order number and whatever message you were shown.

We can write that because we would rather lose the margin on a rare failure than have someone tell the internet we took their money and vanished. It is also the only promise in this category that costs the seller something, which is exactly why it is worth reading.

Quick answers

Is it illegal to buy a discounted software key?
For the buyer, no. Any dispute is between the publisher and the seller about whether a licence was distributed within its terms. This is a description of the position rather than legal advice.
Can Microsoft ban my account for using a resold key?
A revoked key stops activating; that is the realistic failure. Buying a key does not by itself put a Microsoft account at risk. Forcing a region-locked licence with a VPN is a different matter, and it is not covered by our refund policy.
What happens if my key is revoked later?
We replace it or refund you in full, with no time limit. Send us the order number and the message you were shown.
